RENESCENTIA NATURA

First Semester | Second Year

This project was completed for Communications, the brief was to take an existing building and introduce a grasshopper (plug-in for Rhino3D) intervention.

I took David Chipperfields Des Moines Public Library and inititally had the challenge of rendering the woven copper sun shading system featured as the curtain wall facade.

The facade is extremely detailed when viewed at close distance, however when viewed from afar resembles copper sheet.

At night when the light source is inside the building. the copper dissappears and the interior is exposed.

My two interventons are;

+   an organic natural structure

+   a physics force-driven "vaulted" simulation

The natural structure "hugs" the building which in reality is situated in a park, hence the title "return to nature", as the project is sympathetic to the natural environment over the Des Moines CBD.

The vaulted forms appear as trunks supporting the south-wing of the building; the organic form "grows" from the roof above these forms (shown in night render).
